The Need for a Copyright law in Uganda

Ensuring Copyright Protection in Uganda: Why it's Essential for Legal Framework

Uganda is one of the countries in East Africa with great talent, this is through painting, singing, dancing and many more, but many creative artists don't benefit from their works because of the failure of the Ugandan Government to implement the copyright law which was drafted and passed as a law by the Ugandan parliament.

we have seen musicians who seek help and request for car washes to be organized on their behalf so they can be help when in need like when they are sick or can no longer get on stage. we have seen artist's like Fred Ssebata, Mamuuli Katumba crying out to the president's brother Salim Saleh for a financial bail out due to sickness and big debts they owe to money lenders.

So how can an artist earn from copyright

  • They are paid royalties when their work is used say on YouTube, Movies, Radio stations
  • They are paid royalties on album sales and concerts, i can give you a case in philly lutaaya family it gets royalties his Christmas album.
  • Musician can sign up to royalty collection bodies that can follow up the number of times their music has been played on radio both in uganda and abroad.
But today if you analyzed the Ugandan Music Industry artists invest a lot both in video production and paying money for rotation to djs and radio presenters but the only way they benefit is through holding music concerts were they get a few party goers.

And the hard part is when the artist can no longer perform on stage. He/she would eat from their albums but since they aren"'t protected that becomes the end of their carrer and will die poor yet they are talented
Rise up for your gift or talent and register with the copyrights body.
